Abstract
Cet article s’intéresse au militantisme des femmes autochtones depuis les années 1960 jusqu’à 1980. Il souligne le rôle des femmes dans le mouvement Red Power, un mouvement pour l’autodétermination des autochtones, et trace la quête pour l’élimination de l’article 12(1) b) de la Loi sur les Indiens, selon lequel les femmes perdaient leur statut d’Indienne en épousant un non-Indien. L’auteure raconte le parcours de l’Association des femmes autochtones du Québec (AFAQ), basée à Kahnawake, qui a non seulement contesté l’article 12(1) b), mais également critiqué les aspects coloniaux des systèmes d’éducation et de santé. Le présent article révèle en outre les différentes tactiques adoptées par les femmes autochtones dans leur lutte pour l’autodétermination et l’égalité, et en particulier pour amender la Loi sur les Indiens.
