Abstract
The implementation of Canadian content requirements for AM radio in 1971 was a turning point for the music industry in Canada. This article explores the context that led to the creation of a 30% quota for Canadian music on commercial radio. It subsequently examines some of the arguments raised at the time for and against such requirements, and then covers the impact of this ruling on the Canadian music industry. The article concludes with a reflection on the relevance of Canadian content today, at a time when many Canadians listen to music on the Internet and satellite radio.
