( N Engl J Med . 2016;375(25):2468–2479) This review discussed the current literature, clinical characteristics, prevention, identification, and treatment of neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS). NAS refers to a postnatal opioid withdrawal syndrome that occurs in 55% to 94% of newborns who are exposed in utero to opioids. Its incidence has increased substantially in the past decade, corresponding with reports of increased opioid use for pain control in pregnant women, increased illicit use of oxycodone and heroin, and an increase in opioid-substitution addiction treatment programs (methadone and buprenorphine clinics).
