Abstract
L’article interroge les « pratiques discursives » relatives aux élèves de SEGPA. Celles-ci sont caractérisées par une naturalisation de la notion d’ « élèves en difficulté » qui conduit à postuler, pour ces élèves, des spécificités cognitives explicatives de leur échec.L’analyse des évaluations nationales réalisées auprès d’un panel de collégiens montre que le niveau scolaire n’est pas le seul élément décisif conduisant à l’orientation des élèves de SEGPA dans ces structures d’adaptation scolaire. D’autres paramètres contribuent à se constituer comme variables prédictives des signalements et des orientations : l’appartenance sociale et l’implantation géographique. En outre, l’étude des résultats obtenus en mathématiques pour l’ensemble du panel révèle que, s’il existe des différences de niveau entre les élèves de SEGPA et les autres collégiens des classes ordinaires, celles-ci ne peuvent pas être imputées aux caractéristiques cognitives supposées des élèves étiquetés « en difficulté ».
