Abstract
Este trabajo aborda la construcción simbólica del colectivo Humanidad en relación con el paradigma del progreso en el siglo XIX. Considerada ya sea como ser verdadero de los hombres -cuyas vidas individuales sólo pueden definirse por su participación en el colectivo-, como sociedad "real" frente a las sociedades nacionales "accidentales" o como garantía de inmortalidad en un mundo post-religioso, la Humanidad es siempre el sujeto del Progreso. Esta construcción es posible porque la certeza del porvenir opera como fundamento de las acciones y como parámetro de evaluación del presente. No obstante, su aceptabilidad dóxica coexiste con las múltiples controversias en torno a la irreductibilidad de progresos materiales y progresos morales o sociales.
