Abstract
Le cannabis est l’arlésienne de la prison : tout le monde en parle mais on ne le montre jamais. Sur le modèle du fait social total de Marcel Mauss, il est un « objet carcéral total », car il révèle et mobilise tous les aspects de la détention, aussi bien sur le plan des individus que celui de l’institution. Interdit par la loi mais omniprésent dans les cellules, le cannabis peut être source de violence et d’apaisement, il est à la croisée des libertés et des contraintes, il constitue à la fois un lien et une barrière. Paradigmatique des ambivalences constitutives de la prison, il est le symptôme et le symbole de l’ambivalence des rapports et des repères sociaux en détention.
