Il y a maintenant 50 ans que la smcq nous présente la « musique d’aujourd’hui », et presque aussi longtemps que des voix s’élèvent pour se plaindre d’un « goût du jour » qui n’est pas le leur. Examinant quelques-unes des critiques tenues à l’égard de la smcq au cours des ans et cédant la parole à son directeur artistique Walter Boudreau, rencontré lors d’un entretien, l’auteur démontre que le mandat de l’institution a évolué depuis sa fondation : les ensembles consacrés au genre se sont multipliés à sa suite, le bassin de compositeurs a connu un développement exponentiel, et il convient maintenant d’entretenir le répertoire que l’on mettait au monde dans les années 1960, en veillant bien sûr à ne pas négliger les nouvelles voix. En examinant les concerts de la 51 e saison de la société (2016-2017), on découvre comment Boudreau parvient à s’acquitter de cette tâche.
