La remontee des eaux subsuperficielles du Kuroshio sur le plateau continental de la mer de Chine orientale constitue un apport considerable de nutriments, superieur aux apports des fleuves, Yangtze et Fleuve Jaune. Le temps de residence de l'eau du plateau continental de la mer de Chine orientale est estime a 1,3 ± 0,4 annees. La production nouvelle du phytoplancton est de 73 ± 22 mg C/m 2 /jour et le taux net de sedimentation du carbone organique est de 41 ± 23 mg C/m 2 /jour.
