Resumen El objetivo de esta investigación consistió en determinar cuáles son las principales dificultades que afronta el investigador en etnomatemática cuando indaga sobre el pensamiento matemático indígena y es ajeno a esta comunidad. La metodología empleada para establecer esto, fue hacer un análisis de investigación documental, tomando como referencia gran parte de los textos producidos en Colombia. Este análisis permitió que emergieran categorías que se clasificaron como dificultades. Se concluyó que estas dificultades son el producto de una escasa formación en investigación cualitativa de tipo etnográfica que no le permite al investigador identificar en el diseño de la investigación y en las fases mismas de la ejecución las relaciones de poder, la interpretación del otro (el indígena) y su relación con el mundo actual, lo que puede conllevar a procesos de imposición o a una discusión artificiosa de un pensamiento matemático inexistente en la realidad de la comunidad indígena y que tiene efectos en su educación matemática.
