e syntagme « art poétique » constitue le titre ou se retrouve dans le titre (par exemple « En songeant à un art poétique ») d'une centaine de textes écrits ou traduits en français, traitant de poésie ou l'illustrant ; il désigne un genre protéiforme -allant de l'aphorisme au traité, en passant par le poème, la lettre, la préface et le manifeste -aux frontières aussi floues que la poésie.Quelques données compliquent le travail du théoricien qui voudrait définir le genre : des éditeurs, des critiques et des poètes ont désigné comme arts poétiques des textes portant d'autres titres ; plusieurs arts poétiques ne portent pas ce titre ; des textes intitulés « Art poétique » ne parlent pas, explicitement du moins, de poésie ou n'ont rien à voir avec la poésie.Jeanne Demers, la spécialiste québécoise du genre, qui cherchait un modèle théorique, a décelé sept fonctions de l'art poétique : législative, didactique, incitative, informative, heuristique, critique et poïétique.À sa suite, Pierre Popovic a proposé une typologie assez semblable des visées de l'art poétique : descriptives ; didactiques ; cooptatives ou exclusives ; législatives, normatives ou prescriptives ; théoriques ; rétroactives ou prospectives.Pour ma part, j'aurais tendance à donner platement raison aux dictionnaires qui définissent l'art poétique comme un genre intrinsèquement didactique ; autrement dit, un art poétique didactique est un pléonasme, comme le serait un poème poétique.
