Abstract
The controversial ouster of one of the younger generation's otherwise extremely qualified presidential candidates because he refused to show Navajo language fluency when running for president of the tribe illustrates the dispute between these growing numbers of educated Navajos for whom Navajo is no longer their primary language but who still seek tribal offices and their opponents. Reasons why the opponents seem to be losing this battle are examined and what must be done to give them any hope of reversing this 'death' spiral.
