Roger Bernard reprend le thème des enjeux de l’exogamie comme facteur d’assimilation de la population française au Canada. Il puise une fois de plus dans les données de l’enquête nationale « Vision d’avenir », qu’il dirigea en 1990, et, pour comprendre l’évolution de la langue de communication qu’ils utilisent avec leurs parents, il sonde les enfants des 680 familles exogames francophones retenues, à trois moments distincts – à six ans, à treize ans et à la fin de l’adolescence. Ses conclusions, qui valident ses travaux antérieurs – en particulier la légère supériorité de la mère francophone sur le père francophone à maintenir le français en situation d’exogamie –, confirment que l’anglicisation des échanges est à l’oeuvre, que le choix de la langue de communication dépend de celle des parents – surtout en présence d’un parent anglophone dont l’unilinguisme prescrit l’usage de l’anglais – et aussi de l’âge des enfants dont la période critique se situe entre six et treize ans. Bien que l’endogamie demeure l’association conjugale dominante, le phénomène de l’exogamie, ou mariage mixte, connaît un accroissement important depuis les années 1950 en milieu minoritaire où il est devenu un puissant instrument de l’assimilation linguistique des Canadiens français.
