Abstract
A inclusão indiscriminada de antibióticos na alimentação dos animais tem sido combatida em todo o mundo por induzir ao aparecimento de resistência microbiana. Assim, alternativas de produtos naturais que possam substituir os antibióticos têm sido buscadas. Os óleos essenciais e extratos de plantas apresentam-se como potenciais para a inclusão nas dietas dos animais submetidos à produção intensiva, sendo considerados, sobretudo, como substâncias economicamente viáveis para a substituição desses produtos nas rações. Comparou-se a utilização de óleos essenciais aos antibióticos em um estudo conduzido com 80 leitões nas fases pré-inicial e inicial. Os óleos essenciais apresentaram efeito similar aos antibióticos para: ganho de peso, consumo de ração e conversão alimentar. O custo da utilização dos óleos foi significativamente menor, demonstrando a sua viabilidade econômica, bem como possibilita avanços nas avaliações de produtos naturais como forma de promover a saúde dos homens e dos animais.
