Abstract
Gaétan Gervais sonde les fondements historiques de la fameuse « école mère » du fort Frontenac (aujourd’hui Kingston). Cette institution, que Cavelier de la Salle y aurait fait construire, en 1676 ou 1678, pour l’instruction de la population qui y séjournait et confiée aux récollets, aurait été le premier établissement d’enseignement de l’Ontario. Analysant tour à tour les caractéristiques qu’on supposait à cette petite école et les arguments avancés par Arthur Godbout, qui se fit le principal diffuseur de cette thèse, il en trouve les sources chez trois historiens de la fin du xixe et du début du xxe siècle (Louis Le Jeune, Camille de Rochemonteix et Benjamin Sulte) et la reconnaissance officielle par trois groupes de chercheurs de la mouvance pédagogique qui tous, à une exception près, ont accepté cette hypothèse sans sourciller (historiens, chercheurs et pédagogues) et l’ont colportée, jusqu’à tout récemment, en amplifiant même le « fait ». Après avoir aussi noté les « lourds silences » des groupes d’acteurs (militants, historiens, compilateurs et récollets) qui n’auraient pas manqué de relever une telle réalité, Gervais conclut qu’il n’y a jamais eu d’école au fort Frontenac et que cette thèse appartient au monde du mythe : elle s’accordait si bien aux revendications scolaires que défendait Godbout et qu’ont soutenues, après lui, d’autres chercheurs engagés, pourtant mieux outillés, que l’idée d’une remise en cause n’effleura aucun de ces militants.
