Abstract
L’histoire du Musée des beaux-arts du Canada et de sa politique culturelle est inscrite dans la problématique du rôle des musées au sein de la société depuis le XIXe siècle. La création du Musée des beaux-arts du Canada en 1880 est liée à l’identité nationale canadienne qui s’est constituée à l’ère de l’émergence des nationalismes au XIXe siècle. Cet article s’attache à contextualiser la création du musée dans sa dimension historique ainsi que de problématiser les notions de mémoire et de transmission qui seront centrales dans la question de l’existence des musées au XIXe et XXe siècles.
