Gaétan Gervais étudie les quintuplées Dionne, « les Franco-Ontariennes les mieux connues de l’histoire », qui n’ont pourtant passionné que des auteurs de langue anglaise et qui, assez curieusement, ne figurent encore dans aucun manuel d’histoire franco-ontarienne. Son attention se concentre sur la période de la tutelle, qui commence peu après la naissance des « jumelles » en 1934 et prit fin en 1944. Établie pour empêcher une possible exploitation commerciale de la part des parents, Elzire Legros et Oliva Dionne, la tutelle a, au contraire, mis en place une véritable entreprise de malversation, à laquelle a participé le protégé du gouvernement libéral ontarien, le docteur Dafoe, qui avait réussi à évincer la famille naturelle. L’auteur observe les interventions de l’Association canadienne-française d’éducation de l’Ontario (l’Acféo) dans cette bataille religieuse, linguistique et juridique. Il expose clairement la nature des conflits qui opposaient les parents aux « experts », pédagogues et autres profiteurs, et au gouvernement qui avait imposé la tutelle ; il révèle surtout la dimension ethnique du conflit, exprimant l’opinion qu’on n’aurait pas contraint de la sorte une famille canadienne-anglaise et protestante. Selon Gervais, le dossier des « jumelles Dionne » ne fut, dans l’optique de l’Acféo, qu’un autre épisode de l’histoire des luttes historiques des Franco-Ontariens pour le contrôle de l’enseignement français et catholique.
