Abstract
Fernand Dorais, professeur de littérature à la retraite de l’Université Laurentienne, a choisi pour son premier article – il annonce une trilogie – d’exhumer un essai publié à Ottawa en 1943 et, à son avis, injustement tombé dans l’oubli. Il s’agit de Désespoir de vieille fille de Thérèse Tardif, un livre qui choqua lors de sa parution et fit un tel scandale qu’il eut droit, la même année, à la Réponse à « Désespoir de vieille fille » de Simone Routier. C’est que Thérèse Tardif était la première femme « à parler de la part matérielle de l’amour ». À l’aide des recensions de l’époque, des articles de Tardif et des méthodes critiques, l’auteur propose une nouvelle lecture de cette oeuvre, « vraiment extraordinaire dans le Canada français de 1943 », qu’il situe dans le courant des écrivains catholiques français de son temps.
