L’article examine la question du rôle joué par les femmes dans la gestion des institutions locales. Pour répondre à cette question il faut d’abord réfléchir sur la définition du pouvoir local et la définition des institutions faisant partie de ce pouvoir local. Par la suite, à partir du cas précis de l’Outaouais québécois, l’auteure constate que les femmes ont une présence relativement minime au niveau des gouvernements municipaux mais une présence beaucoup plus forte au niveau des institutions d’éducation et d’affaires sociales. Cette présence peut être expliquée en partie par l’importance relativement faible accordée à ces institutions dans la société mais plus encore par ce qui relie les domaines de consommation collective et les femmes.
