Abstract

Methods: This study was carried out on 28 cadavers of both sexes and of different ages using the traditional anatomical macro- and micro-dissection. Summary of results: In the current anatomic study special attention was given to the relationship of the posterior division of the obturator nerve with respect to surrounding structures that may, in certain conditions, constitute critical sites of entrapment. These entrapment sites are as follows: The obturator canal, where the posterior division is surrounded by the obturator vessels, nerve to obturator externus muscle, anterior division of the obturator nerve, and adipose tissue. The fibro-muscular canal formed by the obturator membrane and the posterior surface of the obturator externus muscle. The muscular tunnel where the posterior division perforates the obturator externus muscle. The distinct fascial plane situated deep to the pectineus and adductor brevis muscles and superficial to the obturator externus and proximal one third of the adductor magnus muscles. Conclusion: Knowledge of the sites of entrapment of the posterior division of the obturator nerve can aid in the diagnosis of peripheral neuropathies, and contribute to safe and more effective surgical procedures.
