Abstract
Jack Simpson arrived in Australia after a year working at sea. He had left South Shields, his home in England's north-east, two days after his father's death, now at the age of 17 the breadwinner for his mother and sister. No matter what part of the world he was in, in peace and in war, he regularly sent them one quarter to a third of his wages. In May 1910 Simpson deserted his ship at Newcastle, and after some months on the wallaby and working as a cane cutter in Queensland, he arrived in Illawarra and got a start at the mine in Coledale where he and his work gang were sacked for being slack. After three weeks of unemployment he got work at South Bulli pit and was boarding miserably with a South Shields couple in Corrimal in November 1910. After some time at Mt Kembla colliery, he picked up intermittent jobs on coastal vessels as a steward, fireman and greaser.
