L’auteur tente de constituer une théorie de la participation dans les champs social et politique. Il s’agit d’identifier un nombre d’expériences autonomes dont la somme permette la préfiguration de l’émergence d’un type nouveau de mouvements : peu structurés, opposés aux modèles de type institutionnel, largement solidaires. Trois grandes catégories de participation (conservation, survie, changement) permettent de classifier le matériel recueilli. On s’interroge sur le caractère démocratique des mouvements de participation. Divers projets de recherche en cours sont évoqués.
