L’enjeu des pratiques de recherche-action se situe dans la dynamique d’ensemble qu’elles déclenchent, en particulier en mettant en cause certains aspects fondamentaux de la division sociale du travail : la séparation entre les activités intellectuelles et non-intellectuelles. L’auteur relate une recherche-action menée dans une usine utilisant l’amiante qui aboutit à une intervention médicale spécifique et surtout à une prise en charge par les ouvriers de leurs conditions de travail. À travers cette expérience apparemment strictement médicale se dégagent des revendications à la fois précises et globalisantes. La prévention est désormais posée comme une question de l’organisation du travail et de la société. La représentation des divers acteurs s’est transformée : le syndicat, par exemple, a intégré l’activité scientifique dans sa stratégie de lutte.
