Abstract
Janez Vajkard (Johann Weichard) Valvasor se je rodil leta 1641 v Ljubljani in je umrl leta 1693 v Krskem. V njegovih delih zaznamo veliko raziskovalne vneme in ljubezni do domace zemlje, torej Kranjske, kar je tudi vodilo do ustanovitve graficne delavnice leta 1678. Delavnico je ustanovil po tem, ko se je ustalil na gradu Bogensperk, ki ga je leta 1672 kupil od barona Franca Alberta Kajzla. Na grad je povabil razne risarje in bakrorezce, ki so pod njegovim vodstvom ustvarjali dela v okviru razlicnih tematik. Najvidnejsi povabljeni risarji in bakrorezci so: Almanach, Justus van der Nypoort, Johann Wiriex, Pavao Ritter Vitezovic, Peter Mungerstorff, Andrej Trost, Mihael Stangl, Matija Greischer, Jernej Ramschissl in Janez Koch. Za Valvasorja so izdelovali grafike, ki jih je kasneje vkljuceval v svoja knjižna dela. Valvasor je bil tudi zbiralec graficnih listov in risb. Leta 1685 jih je dal zvezati v osemnajst zvezkov, od katerih se jih je do danes ohranilo sedemnajst. Dragoceno zbirko hranijo v Arhivu Republike Hrvaske v Zagrebu v okviru Bibliothece Metropolitanae, v Sloveniji pa je dostopna kot faksimile z naslovom Iconotheca Valvasoriana. Vecino materiala za ikonoteko je Valvasor nasel na svojih potovanjih, medtem ko je osemnajsti zvezek v celoti posvecen rastlinam in živalim Kranjske. V XVIII. zvezku ikonoteke so akvareli, ki jih je naslikal zaenkrat se neznani avtor, po vsej verjetnosti pa jih lahko pripisemo Valvasorju ali enemu izmed njegovih sodelavcev. Rastline, upodobljene v osemnajstem zvezku Iconothece Valvasoriane so bile naslikane takoj za tem, ko so bile odtrgane, in vecino jih se danes najdemo v okolici gradu Bogensperk. Akvareli so naslikani izredno spretno, vse povezuje modro-siva senca, rastline in živali pa so zlahka prepoznane. Obstaja možnost, da se je avtor pri nastajanju akvarelov opiral na dela Jacoba Hoefnagla, saj so njegove grafike rastlin in živali, ki jih je hranil v svoji zbirki, dobro služile kot predloge za mnoge slikarje.
