The main components of the physiological structure of the respiratory system are respiratory muscles, the bone structure of the thoracic cage, pleura, the interstitial properties of the lungs, and especially, the airways.Diseases have an effect on these elements.We, physicians should be well-informed about the various features of the respiratory system, treat our patients accordingly, and strive to restore the system to its original physiological conditions, as much as possible.Diseases affecting the airways figure among the most common illnesses.The condition of the airways may be variable and reversible, as is the case in asthma.Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, bronchiectasis, and cystic fibrosis are less variable in nature, and create permanent changes in the airway wall.Diseases affecting the interstitium, pleura and respiratory muscles, on the other hand, affect respiratory pump and lead to restriction.
