Abstract
As Physics World went to press, intense negotiations were taking place to determine where to site the ITER fusion facility. European politicians were trying to persuade representatives from the project's other partners – Canada, China, South Korea, Russia and the US – that ITER should be built at Cadarache in south-east France, while their counterparts in Japan were extolling the virtues of Rokkasho-Mura, situated 600km north of Tokyo. Representatives of the partners failed to reach a decision when they met in Vienna on 4–5 December, but it was hoped that research ministers would agree on a site at a meeting in Washington on 20 December.
