Abstract
“Institutions” is a reflection on the current state of residential care for people with intellectual disabilities in North America. It contrasts the perceived and communicated inclusion the system was intended to promote with the actual lived experience of the clients of that system. Admitting that the system as it stands is likely the best that can be hoped for, and unable to find any solutions, the poet calls on God to meet the needs no system can, and finds that mysteries are inherent to the function of both the institutions of systemized caregiving, and institutions of religion.
