Résumé L'une des explications les plus répandues pour décrire la forme prise par les relations entre usagers et fonctionnaires en Afrique et, ce faisant, les formes spécifiques prises par l'État sur ce continent, réside dans l'existence de pratiques et de représentations communes aux usagers et aux différentes strates de l'administration. Sur la base d'une enquête ethnographique, l'article revient sur les malentendus potentiels pouvant émerger lors de ces interactions et venant nuancer cette seule explication dans le cas sénégalais. L'article tente ainsi de saisir ce que ces potentielles fausses notes et les façons de les prévenir nous disent sur ce que signifie représenter l'État.
