Abstract
« Si tu veux vivre avec cette...fatalité, il n'y a qu'une ressource : c'est de la transmettre. » Et le bébé chinois? La question est si complexe pour l'intelligence humaine qu'on aimerait pouvoir y répondre par l'absurde : il se coiffe toujours de la même façon! Mais encore? Comment se fait-il qu'il soit encore si souvent avorté, le bébé chinois? Tué? Ou abandonné? Ou encore adopté dans un pays étranger? Crime ou nécessité? Droits de l'enfant ou politiques imposées par la collectivité? La tradition chinoise préférant les bonnes questions aux mauvaises réponses, la planète entière se trouve dès lors mal placée pour répondre. Mais le pédiatre est à sa place quand il pose des questions. Se préoccuper des affaires humaines, c'est son affaire professionnelle en tant que défenseur des droits des enfants et de leur famille. Dans un sens plus largement civique, c'est également sa responsabilité en tant qu'intellectuel capable d'éclairer des vérités concernant les droits humains, moins par ingérence que par ouverture d'esprit ou propension à l'action (1,2).
