Abstract
Cet article se penche sur le rôle que les Premières Nations du Canada ont possiblement joué dans la préservation de l’État-nation face aux forces liées à la mondialisation. Il se penche principalement sur l’activisme des Autochtones du nord de l’Ontario et du Québec dans leur lutte contre le développement hydroélectrique à l’intérieur de leurs territoires ancestraux, et ce pour préserver l’environnement naturel essentiel à leur mode de vie traditionnel. Nous soutenons que ces protestations ont eu pour résultat premier l’imposition de contraintes aux États canadien et provinciaux dans leurs plans de développement hydroélectrique. L’impact fut de limiter la capacité des forces globalisatrices à soutirer aux Premières Nations, aux provinces et au Canada le contrôle de ces ressources.
