Présence africaine est née dans le contexte colonial d’après guerre, période peu propice aux initiatives des élites en situation de domination : répression dans les colonies, censure, manque de moyens financiers, concurrence d’autres revues. Figure de rassembleur, stratège, Alioune Diop est cependant parvenu à se frayer une place dans le milieu littéraire colonial et postcolonial : sa revue, dédiée au monde noir, a su résister à l’idéologie de son temps, imposer une existence dans la durée, comme en témoignent les archives (lettres, brouillons).
