Abstract
La présence d’une petite boucle déposée à l’intérieur d’une boîte métallique renfermant des collyres parmi le mobilier de la trousse d’oculiste de La Favorite (musée gallo-romain de Lyon) nous a conduit à envisager cet objet anodin comme un instrument médical à part entière. Cette découverte n’est pas isolée, mais on a souvent interprété ces éléments comme des résidus d’étuis en cuir. L’hypothèse selon laquelle il s’agirait de garrots a parfois été avancée, rarement relayée. L’existence de garrots est pourtant bien attestée dans la médecine gréco-romaine. L’examen des traités médicaux antiques montre qu’il n’est pas nécessaire de comprendre la circulation sanguine pour constater de façon empirique les effets d’une méthode de compression à distance. L’étude des sources textuelles et le contexte archéologique du mobilier lyonnais nous invitent à reconsidérer cette hypothèse de travail.
