Le lecteur trouvera ici la description du développement et du mécanisme de la « morale des affaires », cette éthique partielle et spécifique qui, plus souvent qu'à son tour, entre en conflit ouvert avec la morale tout court, la morale humanitaire ou chrétienne. L'auteur nous montre comment les hommes d'affaires ont usé et abusé de cette « morale », et comment les unions ont fini par l'accepter comme instrument fort commode de dialogue avec les employeurs et de victoire sur eux. L'emploi de la force a fait avancer les unions: le capitalisme n'est plus un sujet « tabou »; tout est remis en question. Mais si la puissance doit être le facteur déterminant, où allons-nous ? Vraisemblablement, vers un régime où « le Travail » régnera en maître. Mais cette domination en perspective, diffère-t-elle vraiment des autres formules totalitaires ? Il reste une chance de salut: patrons et ouvriers ont encore le recours possible à des décisions conscientes et libres. Il faut que disparaisse l'éthique d'inimitié, et que la morale traditionnelle régisse enfin les relations patronales-ouvrières. Sinon, c'est le chaos.
