For Love and Money: Marital Leadership in Family Firms

Abstract
Combining agency and human capital lenses, we argue that there is one particular type of leadership that is especially advantageous in established family firms – namely, leadership by married couples. Our empirical analysis confirms that family firms led by married couples perform significantly better than other firms, especially in contexts where agency costs are significant and human capital is critical to business success. This result is robust to a wide array of estimation techniques, including instrumental variables, matching, and transition analyses to mitigate endogeneity concerns. Taken together, our findings contribute to important ongoing debates in the family business and leadership literatures.
