Keeping up with the Joneses: How Family Firms Navigate their Foreign Direct Investment

Abstract
Building on the notions of socioemotional wealth, we argue that imitation of peers offers a strategy for family firms to manage threats of internationalization. We show that family firms follow peers that are guided by similar socioemotional wealth considerations rather than pursuing own family-specific strategies. A family firm’s tendency to imitate is strengthened when entering a foreign market initially and mitigated when the firm is publicly listed. The reduction of risk through imitation, however, comes at the costs of lower short-term performance. We test our predictions on a large sample of German family firms and find support for our hypotheses.
