Abstract
For over a quarter of a century multinational companies have been finding ways to make their global business more efficient, seeking to bring the same techniques they use domestically to their international funds flows. Today, a company that is not affected in some way by global trends and international business is the exception. The Internet has greatly facilitated access to international markets and made worldwide sourcing viable. This chapter focuses on cross-border payments and managing foreign exchange and commercial risk. It summarizes the major payment methods and their respective advantages and disadvantages. Receiving payments from overseas can also be a lengthy and expensive business. The chapter provides an illustration of how a company might structure its risk management strategy. Commercial risk is another major concern for companies doing business overseas. Foreign exchange risk must be recognized, measured, and managed.
