Meer dan 150 jaar na de publicatie van On the origin of species van Charles blijft het creationisme ontzettend populair. In de Verenigde Staten gelooft bijna de helft van de bevolking dat God de aarde en het leven erop minder dan tienduizend jaar geleden heeft geschapen. Het creationisme is echter geen louter Amerikaans fenomeen: over gans de wereld, van Canada tot Australië, van Zuid-Korea tot Brazilië, steekt het de kop op. Ook in sommige delen van Europa worden creationisten steeds actiever. Niet alleen het wetenschappelijk onderwijs staat daarbij op het spel. Creationisten dromen van een theocratie waarin geen plaats is voor democratische beginselen en rechten. Dit boekje schetst de evolutie van het creationisme, van de eerste religieuze reacties op Darwins evolutietheorie over het zogenaamd wetenschappelijk creationisme tot intelligent design. Vervolgens biedt het een overzicht van de meest opvallende creationistische activiteiten in Europa en verklaart het waarom creationistische overtuigingen populair blijven, ook al spreekt de wetenschap hen overtuigend tegen.
