This paper introduces the concept of polarization-dispersive (PD) antenna. The antenna consists of a patch radiator orthogonally fed by a network composed of a power divider with a phaser-loaded arm and a transmission-line-loaded arm. The PD characteristic is realized by designing the phaser such that the phase difference at the two excitation points varies, across a specified frequency range, from -90° to +90° through 0°, corresponding to a meridional excursion from left-handed circular polarization (LHCP) to right-handed circular polarization (RHCP) via linear polarization (LP) in the Poincaré sphere. A proof-of-concept PD antenna design is demonstrated and applied to encrypt a communication link. A more sophisticated system will be presented at the conference, where, using simultaneously full Poincaré-sphere mapping and dispersion coding, will lead to much more robust encryption for high-speed communication.
