Before the development of modern computational techniques, wave propagation in tunnel and mine environments was analytically modeled by drawing an analogy between such environments and standard, over-moded electromagnetic waveguides. While this analogy is physically intuitive and insightful, an open question is whether standard waveguides can serve as proper surrogate models of general tunnel environments, especially when the cross-section of the latter is arched and if so, what are their corresponding dimensions. Such models can lead to analytical, rapid propagation prediction over very long distances. We present a systematic approach to derive rectangular waveguide surrogate models for general tunnel geometries and demonstrate its accuracy and efficiency in practical cases of road and subway tunnels.
