Simple beam control of end-fire antenna using FSS for MM-wave applications

Abstract
In this paper, a simple beam tilting of an end-fire antenna by integrating a Frequency Selective Surface (FSS) at 30 GHz is proposed. A modified uniplanar compact FSS (MUC-FSS) is designed to obtain a bandpass in the desired direction and a bandstop in the other direction. Simulation results of integrating the proposed FSS (1 layer of 3×5 unit cells) under the directors of the antenna show that the main beam radiation tilts in the end-fire direction by +27° and -17° when the FSS structures are rotated by 90° at 30 GHz. A bandwidth from 28GHz to 33 GHz and a realized gain of 11dB are obtained from simulation, without much variation, for the antenna when adding the periodic structure.
