L’idée que la science est un phénomène social est aussi vieille que la sociologie, comme on peut le voir chez Auguste Comte ou Émile Durkheim. L’un des objectifs de la sociologie comme nouvelle discipline est précisément, pour Durkheim, d’élaborer une nouvelle théorie de la connaissance, selon laquelle les concepts sont des représentations collectives.
