Abstract
En este artículo se analizan varios textos que pueden asignarse a varas disciplinas humanísticas: historia, teatro y poesía. Sin ser ésta una elección apriorística, es notable la pertenencia de estos tres géneros a la tradición clásica greco-romana y al humanismo renacentista. Si analizamos el contenido repartido en estos tres géneros, el artículo dedica más espacio a la historia y al teatro y menos a la poesía, aunque en ambos poetas seleccionados – Gutierre de Cetina y Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz –, la calidad y originalidad de su producción alcanza el momento más expansivo de un florecimiento humanístico en el Nuevo Occidente. Tengo que agregar, por lo que se refiere a los otros dos géneros, que la Crónica de la Nueva España nos ofrece una documentación de primera mano, coleccionada por Francisco Cervantes de Salazar sobre los testimonios de los que protagonizaron la magna empresa, y que las dos comedias de Juan Ruiz de Alarcón y Mendoza – Las paredes oyen y La verdad sospechosa –, aparte de ser las primeras obras teatrales de un costumbrismo moralista que lograra la admiración e imitación de autores europeos del calibre de Molière y de Goldoni, nos ofrecen aún hoy la imperecedera calidad de la expresión espontánea que, junto al dominio de un rico lenguaje castizo contribuyen a ofrecer al público el placer de una comicidad inteligente y sumamente entretenida.
