Abstract
Appuyée sur l’étude d’actes notariés de la région de Montpellier à la fin du Moyen Âge, en particulier des testaments et des contrats de travail, cette recherche explore la manière dont parents et adultes envisageaient les soins aux enfants. Les enfants des archives notariées étaient l’objet de soins qui visaient leur survie ou leur subsistance (allaitement, alimentation) et de soins qui avaient pour but leur éducation (apprentissage de la lecture, apprentissage d’un métier). Les circonstances qui entouraient l’octroi des soins divergeaient d’un enfant à un autre : le milieu social des familles jouait un rôle déterminant à cet égard. Pour les familles pauvres de la région de Montpellier, prendre soin de son enfant pouvait signifier son placement dans un autre foyer. Dans les demeures aisées, l’embauche d’une nourrice à domicile ou d’un précepteur signifiait de la même façon les soins apportés au bien-être et au devenir des enfants. Le thème des soins aux enfants permet ici d’étudier les responsabilités parentales, leur signification et leurs implications pratiques.
