A partir de meus resultados de pesquisa sobre problemas de saúde mental, violências no trabalho, assédio moral no Québec (Canadá) com diferentes grupos ocupacionais constatamos um grau elevado de sofrimentos (stress, burnout, assédio moral, violências etc.). Trata-se de problemas graves tanto do ponto de vista individual quanto organizacional com custos econômico e social extremamente elevados. A leitura do livro de Susan Sontag, Diante da Dor dos Outros, nos levou a nos questionar sobre como gestores e líderes reagem diante dos sofrimentos de seus subordinados. Como a liderança pode ser exercida diante dos sofrimentos de seus subordinados? Como explicar uma administração tão desumana dos recursos? O que fazer? Como os gestores podem tolerar tantos sofrimentos como problemas de saúde mental e assédio moral? Como pode o empregador não perceber a violência, os sofrimentos? Tal retrato organizacional não pode passar despercebido. Como compreender essa cegueira organizacional? A partir de nossas experiências e de resultados de pesquisa avançaremos seis hipóteses para pensarmos essas questões, parafraseando Zygmunt Bauman, sem ter o objetivo ou a pretensão de oferecer respostas definitivas. As seis hipóteses são: 1) Incompetências na Gestão de Recursos Humanos, 2) Liderança ruim ou ausente, 3) Traços de personalidade, 4) A negação dos sofrimentos, 5) Cinismo organizacional e 6) Indiferença.
 Acreditamos que tanto os gestores como os líderes deveriam se sentir interpelados e refletir sobre qual é o sentido e o que significa uma realidade organizacional repleta de sofrimentos. Como essa realidade influencia nossa capacidade de assimilar, tomar decisões, de intervir e de prevenir os sofrimentos nas organizações contemporâneas. Torna-se importante examinar, criticar e questionar as banalizações, as negações, as racionalizações, os “evitamentos” fornecidos como justificativas a essa cegueira organizacional face aos sofrimentos. Como no romance de Saramago, devemos nos questionar sobre “por que foi que cegámos”, Para que talvez um dia cheguemos a conhecer a razão. Senão corremos o risco de continuarmos a estar “Cegos que veem, Cegos que, vendo, não veem”.
