All-optical wavelength conversion using a liquid-filled photonic crystal fiber

Abstract
We theoretically investigate widely tunable wavelength conversion based on four-wave mixing using a carbon-disulfide-filled photonic crystal fiber (CS2-PCF). We designed a CS2-PCF with nonlinear coefficient of 7740 W-1km-1, nearly-zero dispersion of 0.00007 ps/(nm km) and a dispersion slope of 0.000018 near 1550 nm. Considering the effect of nonlinear optical response of CS2, a 2-meter-long CS2-PCF is used as a nonlinear medium for wavelength conversion of a 10 Gb/s non-re turn-to-zero (NRZ) signal. A 3-dB tunable wavelength conversion bandwidth is about 108 nm and the conversion efficiency is about -10.6 dB when the pump power is only 14 dBm. The eye diagrams show that there is no additional noise during wavelength conversion. Simulations show the feasibility of even higher bit rates (up to 100 Gb/s) operation by using appropriate input pulses.
