Abstract
Abstract Smallholder irrigators in large publicly funded irrigation schemes are poorly linked to markets and input supplies of fertilizers, seeds, machinery, pumps, etc., as well as to credit and extension services. Consequently, there is very low crop water productivity and large amounts of water wasted in smallholder irrigation. A new irrigation business model is proposed, which is linked to markets and value chains. In addition, the business model incorporates aspects of capacity building, innovation and entrepreneurship in the rural sector. It is hoped that through application of this irrigation business model, vastly improved water use efficiency, as well as higher incomes and economic benefits, can be realized by smallholder irrigators.
