Abstract
Gérard Chaliand, géopolitologue, explique les raisons qui ont mené, d'une part, aux échecs occidentaux dans les guerres irrégulières et, d'autre part, à la chute actuelle de l'État islamique. Il critique également les inconsistances de la politique étrangère américaine et française, ainsi que le rapport que cultive l'Occident avec la violence. Cet entretien, effectué le 26 avril 2017, est l’occasion de revenir sur le parcours atypique d’un homme. Né en 1934, Gérard Chaliand a arpenté le globe et ses conflits en étant observateur-participant : de la Guinée-Bissau au Nord Viêt Nam, en passant par la Colombie, il a également passé beaucoup de temps au Moyen-Orient, se rendant régulièrement en Afghanistan, en Irak et en Syrie. Au-delà de la figure du géopolitologue « aventurier », il y a également celle, moins connue, du poète, qui trouve refuge dans l’écriture face à l’atrocité du conflit. Pour Gérard Chaliand, la violence n’est pas un concept, mais avant tout une expérience de terrain, forcément dure.
