Abstract
In this chapter are outlined the genetic and cellular evidence demonstrating that condensations (the membranous skeleton) are the fundamental cellular units of skeletal morphology, development and evolution. How condensations are visualized and characterised, arise, grow and set their boundaries are evaluated, as is the switch from the condensation to the differentiation phase of skeletogenesis. NCam and cadherins, cAMP and p-53 and the paired classes of DNA-binding Hox, Pax and Prx genes are introduced as key players.
