Abstract
Masyarakat yang tinggal disekitar hutan memiliki potensi yang besar dalam memanfaatkan hutan, memaknai hutan beserta fungsinya untuk pemenuhan kebutuhan hidupnya. Dusun Promasan merupakan Dusun terakhir di Lereng Gunung Ungaran yang terletak di Desa Ngesrepbalong, Kecamatan Limbangan, Kabupaten Kendal, Jawa Tengah. Dusun Promasan dikelilingi oleh kebun teh dengan latar belakang Gunung Ungaran dan hamparan hutan. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui pemaknaan masyarakat Dusun Promasan tentang fungsi ekologis hutan dan untuk mengetahui cara masyarakat Dusun Promasan memaknai hutan menurut sudut pandang masyarakatnya. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah observasi, wawancara dan pengumpulan data sekunder. Analisis data dilakukan secara deskriptif kualitatif. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa masyarakat Dusun Promasan memaknai hutan berdasarkan fungsi ekologis namun tanpa adanya pengelolaan hutan. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian dapat disimpulkan bahwa masyarakat Dusun Promasan memiliki pengetahuan tentang sains yang masih rendah sehingga masyarakat dalam memaknai hutan hanya berlandaskan pada pengalaman masyarakat dalam memanfaatkan hutan untuk kebutuhan hidup sehari-sehari.
