Abstract
En faisant l’histoire de la firme génoise de sidérurgie et de mécanique générale Ansaldo de 1853 à 1933, le livre posthume d’A. Dewerpe montre une trajectoire de la grande entreprise autre que celle qui est la plus connue : elle repose sur la spécialisation flexible, toujours présente aujourd’hui. Par rapport à la conception dominante de l’histoire des entreprises il met l'accent sur le travail (des cols blancs comme des cols bleus), la science et la comptabilité. Enfin il explique pourquoi le fordisme, à laquelle l’entreprise se rallie pendant la Grande Guerre, est abandonné dans les tumultueuses années d’après-guerre.
