Abstract
Rien ne semble plus évident dans la société victorienne, en apparence si marquée par les normes morales, sociales et économiques, que la notion de marge et de marginalité. Au pourtour – et même aux antipodes d’un centre où règnent classes et valeurs dominantes – on devrait trouver les exclus, les réprouvés. Or une étude plus attentive des témoignages de l’époque fait apparaître une situation beaucoup plus complexe dans laquelle les acteurs du « centre » et des « marges » se côtoient et se croisent constamment selon les circuits imbriqués de l’interdépendance et de l’ignorance sociale. Dans cette société plus mouvante que mobile, le centre, les centres ne sont pas toujours là où on les attend.
